Faculty member Jack Pope, who brings deep industry experience and a passion for teaching, often reminds students that problem鈥憇olving is at the heart of computing. His new textbook, 鈥淒iscrete Mathematics for Data Science,鈥 uses a visual, hands鈥憃n approach to strengthen students鈥 critical thinking. 鈥淪tudents need tools that strengthen their ability to reason, not replace it,鈥 he shared with me. 鈥淥ur goal is to help them understand what鈥檚 happening beneath the surface so they can build the future with intention.鈥
Cybersecurity, our newest program, prepares students to protect the systems that keep our communities connected. Cybersecurity is about trust, ensuring that hospitals, schools, businesses and public services can operate safely. Students gain hands鈥憃n experience that mirrors real鈥憌orld environments, giving them the confidence to meet urgent workforce needs.
We are fortunate to be guided by an outstanding Industry Advisory Board representing organizations such as Target, Mayo Clinic, Amazon, Medica, Siemens, Snap Finance, Oracle, and the University of Minnesota鈥檚 Supercomputing Institute. Their insight keeps our curriculum aligned with employer needs. Based on their recommendations, we strengthened security concepts across our computer science courses and incorporated multiple database technologies, changes that will help students in their future pursuits.
Of course, our ability to continue this innovative programming depends on community support. As the 2026 legislative session continues budget discussions, I remain hopeful that our elected representatives will continue to recognize that investing in higher education strengthens Minnesota鈥檚 students, workforce, and communities.
For Minnesota State colleges and universities, including 豆包成人版 Hennepin, the stakes are significant. Our top capital request this year is $200 million for asset preservation, supporting more than 100 projects statewide to upgrade roofs, windows, exterior walls, and essential mechanical and utility systems. These investments create safe, modern, and inspiring learning environments worthy of our students鈥 ambition.
